Indoor-Outdoor Material Transfer: Bridging Warehouse and Production Line

    Case Introduction

    The Solution

In many manufacturing operations, warehouses and production lines are separated by distance, buildings, or outdoor environments. This physical gap creates logistical challenges that slow material flow, increase labor costs, and introduce operational risks. XGEN Robot’s Counterbalanced FMR solves this problem — delivering seamless, long-distance material transfer across indoor and outdoor environments.

    The Challenge

Our customer, a high-volume manufacturer, operated with a warehouse and production facility separated by an outdoor yard. Raw materials and finished goods needed to move between buildings multiple times daily, requiring manual forklift transport across long distances. This created bottlenecks, exposed materials to weather delays, and consumed significant labor hours.

    Key challenges:

    • Long-distance transport across outdoor terrain
    • Weather-related disruptions in material flow
    • Labor-intensive manual forklift operations
    • Difficulty maintaining real-time inventory visibility

    Our Solution

XGEN Robot deployed the Counterbalanced FMR, an autonomous forklift specifically engineered for indoor-outdoor material transport. The solution integrates with the customer’s existing ASRS and warehouse systems to create a fully automated, end-to-end material flow.

    System Integration

The Counterbalanced FMR works in perfect sync with the ASRS to respond to real-time production demands. From the loading dock to the workshop, the entire process is fully automated — minimizing human intervention and maximizing efficiency.

    The Navigation Breakthrough

Outdoor positioning loss has long been a challenge for autonomous vehicles. Featureless environments, signal interference, and long-distance navigation failures have limited outdoor automation. XGEN Robot’s R&D team implemented a dual-protection navigation strategy:

🔹 3D SLAM + RTK Satellite Navigation – Two systems working together, continuously calibrating and complementing each other to maintain precise positioning

🔹 Autonomous Recovery Algorithms – If positioning is lost, the system detects and recovers automatically, without requiring manual intervention

The result: Reliable navigation in featureless outdoor spaces, rain or shine, with no interference issues.

    Key Capabilities

✅ Seamless System Integration – Works in sync with ASRS, WMS, and production systems for real-time responsiveness

✅ Long-Distance Intelligent Transport – Moves materials from dock to workshop, fully automated

✅ Indoor + Outdoor Operation – Designed for all-weather performance in rain, snow, and extreme conditions

✅ Dual-Protection Navigation – 3D SLAM + RTK with autonomous recovery for reliable outdoor positioning

✅ Cost-Effective Efficiency – Reduces manual labor, eliminates weather delays, and ensures continuous material flow

    Results

    • Uninterrupted material flow – Indoor-outdoor transport with no weather-related downtime
    • Reduced labor costs – Autonomous operation eliminates manual forklift driving
    • Real-time visibility – Integrated with WMS for full tracking and inventory accuracy
    • Reliable outdoor navigation – Dual-protection system ensures positioning accuracy in any environment

    Ideal Applications
